CHAPTER 4 Further Configuration with YaST and SaX2 52
FIGURE 4.2 AlsaConf can configure sound cards that YaST can??™t.
AlsaConf will probe your hardware and identify your sound card(s). Select one to configure
in the second screen (Figure 4.3) and click OK.
The program will configure the card and ask you to test the sound. If it passes the test,
you should always use AlsaConf if anything goes wrong with the sound.
FIGURE 4.3 Select your card in this AlsaConf screen. The program does the rest.
Configuring Video Cards
Video in Linux is a little trickier than audio, as this often involves installing proprietary
kernel modules. The two dominant video card manufacturers, ATI and Nvidia, have been
particularly reluctant to release open source drivers. The good news is that both manufacturers
now offer a software repository for Linux drivers that integrate with YaST. This
makes it a little easier to install and update these drivers. You??™ll learn more about adding
third party repositories to YaST in Chapter 21, ???Keeping Your System Current: Package
Management,??? but here??™s the process for getting and installing these drivers.
