Getting to the Shell
Fortunately, both openSUSE GUI environments provide a few different methods that can be
used to access the Linux shell. Both desktops provide a menu item for accessing the

console, which interacts with the shell. KDE provides two different ways to access the
shell command prompt:
. The KDE Konsole program
. The X Terminal program
Both programs provide a simple graphical access the shell command prompt. The X
Terminal program provides a bare-bones terminal within a graphical window. The Konsole
program provides a few more bells and whistles. It is shown in Figure 8.2.

The Konsole main window shows the shell command prompt, which by default shows your
userid and the name of the openSUSE system. From this prompt you enter shell commands.
The Konsole application also provides a few extra fancy features, such as the ability to copy
and paste text from the command prompt window to the clipboard area, and the ability to
start multiple command prompt windows at the same time within the Konsole window.
