"openSUSE Linux Unleashed"

If you use the KDE desktop environment, the Konqueror application allows you to graphically
modify the properties of a file. After finding the file in Konqueror, right-click the file
icon, and select Properties.
In the Properties window, select the Permissions tab. This tab shows what permissions are
allowed for the file. Check the Is Executable checkbox to make the file executable.
If you prefer to work within the command prompt, you can also set the executable
feature using the chmod shell command:
chmod +x test1
This command makes the shell script executable by anyone on the system. If you are
working in a controlled Linux environment with other users, you may need to be more
restrictive.
Once the file is marked as being executable, manually running a shell script from the
command prompt is an easy task. As mentioned, the shell attempts to find programs in
the file system when they are entered at the command prompt. This is done using the
PATH environment variable. The shell searches the directories listed in the PATH environment
variable for the program.
