Your openSUSE DVD contains the Ekiga (formerly
GnomeMeeting) soft phone and videoconferencing application. You can also download a
free client to access the Skype peer-to-peer phone network.
Both these clients (and other less well known alternatives) will transmit your voice (and
your picture, if you configure your webcam) across the Internet to either another
computer or a physical phone. These clients include text-messaging and file transfer capabilities
and other features typically associated with mobile phones. In this section, you??™ll
learn more about these applications and the networks they access.
Ekiga
Ekiga is an open source VoIP application created by Damien Sandras as a college project
modeled on Microsoft NetMeeting. It is now a robust client supporting both the SIP
phone protocol and the H.323 videoconferencing protocol. It is integrated into the
GNOME desktop, but works just as well in KDE. Every Ekiga user is offered access to the
Ekiga network, as well.
You need a working full-duplex??“capable sound card, a microphone, a webcam, and a
video device to take advantage of all Ekiga??™s capabilities.
