Playing Music and Listening to the Radio 189
10
The basic process of playing music is very similar in each player. All the players except for
XMMS build a music library from folders you identify on first launch. All can play audio
files from CDs and on your hard drive. Search and select the tunes you want to hear, and
they will play. All the players give you the option to play the songs in the order you
select, or choose a random/shuffle order. You can save playlists for future entertainment
and CD burning.
Nearly all these players also support programmable ???Smart??? Playlists. You set some conditions
based on genre, personal ratings, number of plays and the like, and the player
selects some matching tracks.
Some can also play streaming audio from Internet radio stations and audio clips distributed
by RSS, also known as podcasts.
