In order not to break anything, new MTA programs such as Postfix link the
sendmail executable program to their programs.
A permanent Internet connection allows the server to send messages in real-time as they
are generated. Selecting the Permanent radio button enables Postfix to attempt message
delivery as each individual message is created.
Also in this section, you can indicate whether you want an anti-virus program to scan
your inbound and outbound messages. Enabling this feature installs and activates the
Open Source AMaVIS virus detection software.
Outgoing Mail
The next wizard window determines the configuration for how mail messages will be sent
by the Postfix MTA to remote sites. If your server is directly connected to the Internet, it
can send its own mail directly to remote MTAs. No configuration is required here.
CHAPTER 15 Managing Email Servers 320
However, for dial-up connections, you must forward outbound messages through a single
remote mail server. This is called a smart host. The smart host accepts messages destined
for other MTAs and then forwards them to the proper destination MTA.
