A Personal Wiki: Zim
Besides contributing your knowledge (or copy editing skills) at Wikipedia, one great way
of experimenting with wikis is by creating your own. Zim is a Perl application that will do
that for you. You don??™t need an active web server to use it, and it works pretty well out of
the box.
Zim is included in the ???guru??? software depository, and can be installed via YaST. (See
Chapter 21, ???Keeping Your System Current: Package Management,??? for more information
on setting up third-party repositories in YaST.) Once installed, go to the Office menu in
KDE or GNOME, and you??™ll find Zim under Project Management.
Each time Zim runs, it will ask you to ???open a repository,??? which may be more than a
little disconcerting for the first time user. All it is really asking for is a name for a folder to
contain your pages. Click Add and give a name to your wiki, as shown in Figure 16.8. You
can have as many repositories/wikis as you want, so you can use each wiki to manage a
particular project.
