Foreground tasks are those that you start and interact with, such as the command
prompt. Background tasks are often started for you by the system and provide valuable services
such as letting you log into the system. You??™ll find that Server Core uses far fewer processes
than a similar setup in the GUI version of Windows Server 2008. Figure 1.4 shows a typical list of
processes.
Figure 1.4
See the processes running
for all sessions on
the Processes tab.
The default setting shows processes from all users. If you only want to see your own processes,
clear the Show Processes from All Users option near the bottom of the Task Manager dialog box.
However, given the way in which you??™re using this feature, you??™ll probably want to see all processes.
To access a particular user process quickly, right-click its entry in the Applications tab and choose
Go To Process from the context menu. Task Manager highlights the entry in the Processes tab.
As with applications, you can choose to end a malfunctioning process. This act is dangerous
unless you know precisely how the ending the process will affect the system. Task Manager actually
supports two levels of interaction in this case.
