"Administering Windows Server 2008 Server Core"

The following sections describe a few of the utilities that you??™ll find in
Server Core. Other utilities appear throughout the book.
NOTE As previously mentioned, any utility that requires use of graphical features such as the
common dialog boxes or the managed .NET interface won??™t work completely. They may appear to
work for a while, but you won??™t be able to complete tasks with them. For example, you won??™t be
able to display the Save As dialog box because it doesn??™t exist in Server Core. Only utilities, such
as Notepad, that provide built-in dialog boxes will work.
Notepad
Most people are aware they can use Notepad to modify simple text files. For example, you could
use Notepad to write up basic notes for your server. However, you may not be aware that Notepad
can also help you perform basic administration chores. For example, many of the settings for
Windows now exist in XML files. You can use Notepad to modify these settings because XML files
are simple text.
Interestingly enough, the lack of common dialog box support in Server Core doesn??™t affect any
of the Notepad features. You can open and save files as you normally do.
