"Administering Windows Server 2008 Server Core"

Chapter 2 provides the next step in discovering the command prompt. You??™ll discover how to
configure the command prompt and perform a number of new tasks with it. In addition, Chapter 2
helps you understand the difference between internal and external commands. Because the
???Understanding Internal and External Commands??? section of the chapter is so important, you??™ll
want to read it even if you skip the rest of the chapter.
Chapter 2
Using the Command Line Effectively
At one time, everyone worked at the command line. In fact, when you started the computer, you
saw a command prompt and you never really left it the entire time you worked with the computer.
I??™m dating myself, of course, because no one??™s worked exclusively at the command line for many
years. Microsoft is changing that, of course, with Windows Server 2008 Server Core. When working
with this operating system, you??™re effectively limited to working at the command line. You can perform
certain tasks from a client machine using a standard console, but in many cases, these graphical
tools won??™t work and you??™ll need to perform any configuration tasks right at the command line.
