"Administering Windows Server 2008 Server Core"

This chapter helps you build these skills:
? Describe when to use the command line and the command line alternatives
? Configure the command window so that you can use it effectively
? Define the difference between internal and external commands
? Use the Remote Desktop Connection application to connect to the server
Of course, before you can begin working at the command line, it pays to make sure that your
system is ready. One of the first things you need to know is the differences between internal and
external commands. Otherwise, you may not be able to locate commands and utilities you used in
the past. Make sure you get your command line prompt set up as well because you??™ll use it extensively
in Server Core. Once you have everything set up, create a Remote Desktop connection. Using
Remote Desktop can save you considerable time when the server is located in a different room.
Chapter 3 begins showing you how to perform essential maintenance tasks??”the things you
must do in order to get Server Core functional and keep it that way. For example, you??™ll discover
how to perform updates, which is an important first task for your server if you want to keep it virus
free.
