USING MAINTENANCE COMMANDS AND UTILITIES 61
/f Forces any running applications to close without warning. Normally, the system warns the
user of the shutdown and provides time for the user to react. Use this option with extreme caution
because it can result in data loss.
/d [u][p]:xx:yy Specifies a reason for the shutdown. This reason appears as part of the
event log entry. The u argument defines the shutdown as user related. If you don??™t provide the
u argument, the system assumes that the shutdown somehow relates to a system need. The p
argument defines the shutdown as planned. If you don??™t provide the p argument, the system
assumes the shutdown was unplanned??”part of an emergency. The p argument is important
because it affects whether the ShutDown utility is successful. If you provide the p argument and
then use an unplanned reason code, the utility registers an error. Likewise, if you omit the p
argument and use a planned reason code, the utility registers an error. The xx argument is the
major reason code.
