Performing Web-Based Enterprise Management Tasks
Microsoft has worked hard to introduce more techniques for remote management of systems on
large networks, including use of the Internet. Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) is one
of several attempts to make Windows friendlier for large organizations. You??™ll find that WBEM is
the term that many vendors use for this kind of management and there are some de facto standards
for implementing it.
WMI is Microsoft??™s technology for implementing WBEM on Windows. Consequently, you??™ll
often see the two terms used almost interchangeably in the Microsoft documentation. The Windows
Management Instrumentation service provides the server functionality for working with WMI on
a computer system. Although the following sections tell you about the command line utilities that
you can use to work with both WBEM and WMI, they don??™t provide you with administration information
for these technologies.
