"Administering Windows Server 2008 Server Core"

Even so, you??™ll need these hacks at some point
as you manage your Server Core setup.
Chapter 4
Essential Registry Hacks
It was actually possible to work with other versions of Windows without ever touching the registry
directly??”at least it was for the average user. Even administrators rarely touched the registry and
did so with the proper regard for its delicacy. Working with Server Core means not having access
through the Graphical User Interface (GUI) to many features that you had in the past. Now you
must perform certain tasks from the client through consoles, using the Remote Desktop, through
shares, and even using the registry directly. In fact, some tasks, such as reconfiguring the desktop,
require that you use the Registry Editor, rather than make the change using a GUI. For this reason,
you must have some exposure to the registry in order to work with Server Core competently.
This book can??™t provide you with a blow-by-blow description of the entire registry. The registry
is a huge hierarchical database that contains the settings for your hardware, all of the users that work
with the machine, and most of the applications that you??™ve installed.
