Unfortunately, most low-cost editors on the market either edit text or edit binary information,
but not both. Normally, to obtain an editor that does both, you have to buy a full-fledged
programming language such as Visual Studio. Obviously, buying Visual Studio to write batch files
is significant overkill. If you find you need both text and binary editing capabilities in a single
editor, WinVi might provide everything you need. As shown in Figure 7.1, this editor features a
full binary editing mode. It edits text equally well. You can download this product at

The WinVi editor has a few interesting features that make it exceptionally useful to administrators.
One of the more interesting features is that it supports multiple character sets. You can choose
between the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Disk Operating System (DOS), or
Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code (EBCDIC) character sets. The third character
set comes in handy for examining older mainframe data.
Unlike many low-cost editors on the market, WinVi also supports multiple language options.
You can choose between English, French, German, or Spanish as your language.
