To create a scheduled task in Server Core that??™s visible to previous versions
of Windows, you must use the SchTasks utility with the
/V1
command line switch (see the
???Managing Tasks with the SchTasks Commands??? section of the chapter for details). You can also
modify the Configure For field found on the General tab of any standard task you create to support
other Windows versions. The Configure For field only contains Vista as an option when you
create a basic task.
You can easily misuse Task Scheduler. It??™s a tool like any other tool??”valuable in the hands of someone
who knows how to use it, dangerous for everyone else. Never use Task Scheduler to run batch files,
scripts, or applications that aren??™t reliable. If you think there??™s even a small chance that the Task Scheduler
entry will fail to work as anticipated, don??™t create it because locating the problem can require a
substantial investment in time and effort. In addition, it??™s essential to test every Task Scheduler entry
the first time while you??™re at the office. You don??™t want an errant entry to ruin the chances of a perfectly
reliable batch file, script, or application running as anticipated.
