Every system that requires iSCSI support must have access to an iSCSI initiator (the software that makes
the connection). You can download the latest version of the iSCSI initiator at http://
www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=12cb3c1a-15d6-4585-b385-
befd1319f825 to support iSCSI on older versions of Windows (a must for a complete iSCSI solution).
Microsoft provides other support information for iSCSI at http://www.microsoft.com/
windowsserver2003/technologies/storage/iscsi/default.mspx.
An iSCSI connection requires support from an Internet Storage Name Service (iSNS) server. You can
install this server as one of the roles for the GUI version of Windows Server 2008. It??™s also available on a
significant number of other platforms (including Linux). You can obtain a good overview of iSNS and its
relation to iSCSI at http://www.san-ip.com/iSCSI/techoverviewart.htm. Another good overview
appears at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISNS. The actual iSNS standard appears at
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4171.txt.
