272 CHAPTER 9 MANAGING THE HARD DRIVE
Now that you know quite a bit more about the hard drive, try using some of the utilities on a test
system. Never attempt to work with these utilities on a production server unless you??™ve worked
with them extensively. A small mistake may seem minor until you try to recover the data lost on
the hard drive. If you work with a test system for a while first, you can learn from any mistakes in
a nonthreatening environment. Errors on a test server are easier to overcome.
Chapter 10 moves onto the next piece of hardware that will require frequent maintenance, the
network. Although the network hardware doesn??™t have any moving parts, it??™s subject to a great deal
of abuse. People end up crushing cabling, moving cables around, disconnecting Network Interface
Cards (NICs), and generally making it difficult to maintain any kind of connection.
