Even though
the utilities in Chapter 10 can??™t provide a complete solution, they do make working with the network
considerably easier.
Chapter 10
Managing the Network
Networks are complex combinations of hardware and software that link systems together so they
can work interactively and share data. A network can consist of static or dynamic connections.
Managing these connections in Server Core can be a bit of a challenge if you??™re used to working
exclusively with the GUI. However, a surprising number of administrators probably have some
level of experience because many tasks are simply faster to perform at the command line, so Server
Core may not prove as big a shock as you think in this area.
NOTE
Generally, all networks follow the same rules or protocols. A
protocol
is simply a kind of rule
that everyone has agreed to follow, usually through a standards organization. The most famous of
these rules is the International Standards Organization/Open Systems Interconnection (ISO/OSI)
seven-layer network model discussed at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model
.
This chapter isn??™t going to help you configure your network or provide you with advice on how
to create a network.
