You??™ll find network configuration basics in Chapter 1. In addition, many other
books can help you through that process. However, the sections in this chapter do describe the
many useful utilities that Microsoft provides for navigating all seven layers of the network model.
In many cases, these utilities provide you with insights about the construction of your network and
how to prevent outside intrusion (or at least keep it at bay). The utilities you use depend, in part,
on the combination of hardware and software you use, so you need to have some idea of what your
network uses before these sections will become completely useful.
In this chapter, you??™ll learn how to do the following:
?
Obtain Media Access Control (MAC) information with the GetMAC utility
?
Manage the network configuration using the Net utility
NOTE
You may notice as you progress through the book that some older network utilities such as
ATMAdm and ProxyCfg are missing. Some Netware related commands, such as IPXRoute are also
missing. Microsoft is taking the upgrade to Windows Server 2008, especially the Server Core version,
as an opportunity to get rid of some older commands.
