Even though the command
line utilities in Server Core still favor Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4), the version of IP that
you??™ve used all these years, it??™s safe to assume that Microsoft will make further changes at some
point to favor IPv6. In short, you must plan to work with TCP/IP as the operating system version
supports it.
Finally, TCP/IP has evolved over time. In general, some of the utilities you??™ll see in the sections
that follow are remakes of utilities that appear on other systems. The utilities of early UNIX still
appear as part of TCP/IP. Consequently, the following sections may have a few surprises for you
because they include a wide variety of utilities that have a single purpose, diagnosing problems
with TCP/IP connections.
In this chapter, you??™ll learn how to do the following:
?
Manage both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses
?
Discover user information
?
Obtain specific information about the system and its configuration
292 CHAPTER 11
WORKING WITH TCP/IP
?
Discover how the system routes information
?
Perform network diagnostics
?
Obtain network statistics
?
Work with remote resources
Managing the Address Resolution Protocol with the
ARP Utility
The Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) utility displays and modifies the IP address to physical
address translation tables that ARP relies on to make connections.
