The standard output includes the login name, the username, the user??™s Terminal Type (TTY),
the amount of idle time, when the user logged in, and where the user logged in. This utility uses the
following syntax:
finger [-l] [User] [@host] [...]
The following list describes each of the command line arguments.
-l
Displays the user information in long list format, with one item per output line. This option
makes room for long entries. However, it only displays the user??™s login name and username.
User
Specifies the login name of the user to check. When you omit the
user
argument, Finger
displays information about all of the users on the specified computer.
@host
Specifies the identity of the remote computer running the Finger service. You must have
proper rights to make the request on the remote computer. The host information can appear as
a computer name or IP address.
Getting the Local Hostname with the Hostname Utility
The Hostname utility can both set and query the hostname on many operating systems. However,
when using Windows, the Hostname utility can only obtain the name of the host; the utility ignores
the
-s
command line switch.
