Getting NetBIOS over TCP/IP Status with the NBTStat Utility
The NBTStat utility displays a number of NetBIOS statistics about a network, including the NetBIOS
over TCP/IP (NetBT) protocol status. You can also receive information about NetBIOS name tables
for both the local computer and remote computers, and the NetBIOS name cache. The utility helps
you perform specific tasks such as refreshing the local NetBIOS cache or the Windows Internet
Name Service (WINS). This utility uses the following syntax:
NBTSTAT [ [-a RemoteName] [-A IP_address] [-c] [-n] [-r] [-R]
[-RR] [-s] [-S] [interval] ]
It??™s important to note that the command line switches for this utility are case sensitive. Using the
-a
command line switch isn??™t the same as using the
-A command line switch. The following list
describes each of the command line arguments.
-a Lists the remote machine??™s name table when you provide a machine name as input. The
name table includes the NetBIOS name, the type, and the status.
-A Lists the remote machine??™s name table when you provide an IP address as input.
