The PathPing utility allows a maximum of nine hosts in the
host list. You can find a diagram of the affected IP header data at http://www.networksorcery
.com/enp/protocol/ip/option003.htm. You can find a good discussion of this topic in the
???Loose Source and Record Route??? section of the Web page at http://www.freesoft.org/
CIE/Course/Section3/7.htm.
-h maximum_hops Defines the maximum number of hops the utility uses to search for the
target. The PathPing utility automatically stops tracing the path when it reaches the specified
number of hops. Using this option reduces the wait for long paths when you only need to use
some of the path between your machine and the target.
306 CHAPTER 11 WORKING WITH TCP/IP
NOTE A hop is an individual jump from one host to another. For example, when you communicate
with the server on your network, the direct communication between client and server normally
requires one hop or one connection between client and host.
-i address Defines a specific starting address for the path search. The default starting location
is the current machine. However, by starting the path search on your ISP??™s machine or even
further down the path, you reduce the search time.
