When you can??™t
find what you need in the Microsoft Knowledge Base or are unsure whether you??™re reviewing materials
for the right version of the utility, check third-party resources as well. For example, you??™ll find a thirdparty
resource for the PathPing utility at http://www.pchelper.com/modules.php?name=News&
file=article&sid=81&POSTNUKESID=d18f99f92e500ee411dea29a2beabd11.
CHECKING CONNECTIONS WITH THE PING UTILITY 307
-4 Forces PathPing to use Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) calls, even when the system normally
uses IPv6.
-6 Forces PathPing to use Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) calls, even when the system normally
uses IPv4. Even though newer versions of Windows include some level of IPv6 support,
most systems still use IPv4 and will do so for several more years.
NOTE The path from one location to another will likely vary every time you issue the PathPing
command. That??™s because the Internet makes connections on an as needed basis. For example,
try typing PathPing microsoft.com at the command line and pressing Enter. Depending on
your ISP and conditions on the Internet, the path might require 11 hops the first time, 17 hops the
second time, and 15 hops the third time.
