-t Forces the utility to continue pinging the specified host until stopped. Use this feature for
diagnostic tasks so you don??™t have to restart the PING utility continuously. You can stop the utility
in two ways. Press Ctrl+Break to stop pinging the host and generate the statistics that normally
appear at the end of the PING session. Press Ctrl+C to stop the utility immediately without generating
the statistics.
-a Resolves address to hostname. Using this command line switch can require additional
pings to perform a given check, but also means that the output is more readable.
-n count Defines the number of Echo Request messages to send. The default setting is 4.
-l size Defines the size of the buffer used to create the data field of the message. The default
size is 32 bytes. The maximum size is 65,527 bytes. Larger buffers tend to reduce performance,
but also create a more realistic test. Generally, you should test with the same size buffer that
your application will use.
-f Sets the Don??™t Fragment flag in the packets. Routers generally break down packets into
smaller sizes to improve performance. In addition, some routers don??™t accommodate the same
size packet, so the packet becomes fragmented to meet the needs of a specific router.
