316 CHAPTER 11 WORKING WITH TCP/IP
Tracking the Network Path with the TraceRt Utility
The Trace Route (TraceRt) utility serves an important function by showing you the path between
your machine and a remote machine. Essentially, this is a simpler form for the PathPing utility
described in the ???Tracing Transmission Paths with the PathPing Utility??? section of the chapter.
Unlike the PathPing utility, the TraceRt utility doesn??™t provide calculated network statistics, but it
does show the time required between hops as shown in Figure 11.8. To obtain this kind of output,
simply type TraceRt Location and press Enter.

Use TraceRt for quick
connection checks
between systems.
The TraceRt utility does have one significant advantage over the PathPing: it keeps trying to find
a route even through multiple errors, which makes it valuable with troublesome routes. Using the
TraceRt utility is also significantly faster than PathPing because you don??™t have to wait for it to calculate
the statistics.
