Managing Windows in a New Way
Microsoft provides a lot of support for TCP/IP and it??™s no wonder that they do. The TCP/IP connection
on your system is possibly the most important part of the server because it provides access
to the outside world. Unfortunately, it??™s all too easy to misconfigure TCP/IP, which is why you
need the utilities described in this chapter. This chapter helps you build these skills:
? Manage both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses
? Discover user information
? Obtain specific information about the system and its configuration
? Discover how the system routes information
? Perform network diagnostics
? Obtain network statistics
? Work with remote resources
Now that you know what utilities exist to work with TCP/IP, you??™ll want to spend some time
working with them. The most important utilities are IPConfig and NetStat, so you should spend
quite a bit of time working with them. These two utilities, when combined with a utility such as
PING, PathPing, or TraceRt can solve as much as 90 percent of your networking problems. The
other utilities described in this chapter help solve that other 10 percent, so you??™ll want to spend
some time with them too.
