A role is a major operating system
component, such as acting as a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server. On the
other hand, a feature augments the server in some way, such as providing support for BitLocker.
The difference between the two kinds of add-ons is that one defines what the server can do and the
other enhances the server functionality. In some cases, you??™ll find that you need to install certain
features to ensure a role will work. Some roles rely on each other as well. Server Core provides
input on how to perform the configuration properly.
You??™ll also want to discover how to work with error reports. Server Core includes a special utility
for the task, ServerWEROptin. This utility is new for Server Core (you??™ll also find it in other versions
of Windows Server 2008, but will likely work with the GUI to configure it). In most cases, providing
error report information helps Microsoft create a better operating system without revealing any
information about the sender??”at least in theory.
NOTE
I haven??™t personally taken the error reporting utilities apart, so I can??™t tell you with absolute
certainty that the utilities are completely safe, but it seems to be in Microsoft??™s best interests
to keep the information private.
