"Administering Windows Server 2008 Server Core"

Data isn??™t just the files that users create??”
it??™s also the configuration files you use or any other form of information that someone or something
creates. The information in this chapter helps you administer data. In most cases, you??™ll use other
applications to create the data, but managing it is important. This chapter helps you build these skills:
? Manage files
? Compress and expand files
? Output files to a device
? Take ownership of files
? Manage file types and associations
? Work with the ODBC functionality
Now that you have the knowledge required to throw out Windows Explorer, you??™ll want to
exercise your new freedom. Create a temporary directory on your server and fill it with copies of
files that you won??™t need later. Try out the various commands and utilities in this chapter. Especially
important is learning to use the utilities that perform a lot of tasks at once, such as RoboCopy.
Although playing around with these new commands is fun, you also have a critical task to perform.
If you haven??™t made a backup of your server already, now is the time to use the WBAdmin utility
to do it. Even your test server has some value and you should take the time to back it up regularly,
if for no other reason than to practice the techniques required to back up your production servers.
