There is more to discover about files and directories. For example, you??™ll eventually want to
check your hard drive for errors and set security on both the files and directories. Chapter 15 provides
everything you need to know about these tasks and more.
Chapter 15
Managing Files and Directories
Files and directories are storage containers for data. In Chapter 14, you discovered many of the utilities
that help you manage data. However, you haven??™t yet discovered the techniques for managing
the storage containers that hold the data. Even a database manager relies on files to provide permanent
data storage, so the information you find here applies even to complex data scenarios.
The files and directories on your hard drive require management. Normally, the application
performs this management directly as part of performing its tasks. However, you may find the
need to perform some management tasks manually. For example, a file may have a system or other
attribute attached to it that won??™t allow you to move the file. Normally, you??™d leave such a file
alone, but you may find the need to move it, which means removing the attributes, moving the file,
and reapplying the attributes.
