All of the files and directories on your system appear as part of another container, the hard
drive. You??™ll find most of the hard drive??“related utilities in Chapter 9 of the book. However, this
chapter contains a number of hard drive utilities that affect management of the files and directories.
For example, when the hard drive encounters an error, the error affects the files and directories, so
you??™ll find those management utilities in this chapter.
A final consideration for files and directories is security. Security consists of setting file and
directory attributes known as Access Control Lists (ACLs) to control access. However, access control
isn??™t always enough, so you must also perform file and directory monitoring. In many cases,
someone with ill intent will leave fingerprints that will tell you about their activities. Monitoring is
the only way to see the fingerprints these individuals leave behind.
In this chapter, you??™ll learn how to do the following:
?
Manage file attributes and status information
?
Perform hard drive maintenance related to files and directories
?
Encrypt and compress file and directory entries on the hard drive
?
Locate files based on various criteria
?
Secure and monitor files and directories
