The techniques described in this chapter
help you secure the containers that hold your data, manage those containers to ensure they remain
useful, and even perform repairs on the containers as needed. This chapter helps you build these
skills:
? Manage file attributes and status information
? Perform hard drive maintenance related to files and directories
? Encrypt and compress file and directory entries on the hard drive
? Locate files based on various criteria
? Secure and monitor files and directories
Windows Explorer does provide useful functionality in that you can learn quite quickly who has
access to a particular file or directory. However, the graphical interface can actually hide security
holes in plain sight because people don??™t actually view the information that Windows Explorer provides
until it??™s too late. The ICACLS command described in this chapter is an essential tool for
securing your system and it pays to review the security you have in place at least.
This chapter also presents myriad other tools to help you manage the storage containers on the
hard drive. One of my personal favorites is the FindStr utility because it can help you find data
inside files faster than Windows Explorer ever could and with greater accuracy than Windows
Explorer provides.
