Many of the utilities described in this book provide a method for creating a
remote connection, but not necessarily a connection where you can manipulate objects as well as
run utilities. In addition, some utilities don??™t provide a remote connection feature. Even though the
Remote Desktop does open the potential for a security breach, you can generally keep security
under control by ensuring you create a secure connection. The following sections describe utilities
you can use to perform remote system management.
426 CHAPTER 17
CREATING SYSTEM CONNECTIONS
NOTE
Unlike the graphical version of Windows Server 2008, Server Core doesn??™t support Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS). One of the prerequisites for using ICS is the Shared Access service. You
can see this service by typing
SC Query SharedAccess
and pressing Enter at a command line
in the graphical version. When you look for this same service in Server Core, you??™ll find that it??™s
missing. Microsoft may eventually enable this service, but in the meantime, you can??™t use ICS
within Server Core. As an alternative to using ICS, you can always set up a dedicated router on
your network??”one that hopefully includes a hardware firewall.
