"Administering Windows Server 2008 Server Core"

You need to monitor it in a number of ways. When you
perform automated tasks, you need to ensure the tasks complete as anticipated. You??™ll also need to
check the event logs for events that have occurred on your system. This is one place where using
the Event Viewer console is more convenient, but you can also perform the task from the command
line when necessary. The goal is to make sure you understand what the system is doing.
The performance of your system is important as well. If the system doesn??™t perform well, then
users will complain. Performance is more than simple speed. A system that performs well has good
security, is reliable, and completes tasks quickly. Unless you include all three goals in your performance
strategy, your system is doomed to perform poorly at some point.
Monitoring also means knowing what others are doing with the server. You must not only check
for external sources of corruption but also internal sources. Corruption can come in many forms. Of
course, the forms of corruption that grab the headlines include viruses, adware, and stolen data.
However, corruption could mean entering the wrong data into a database or configuring an application
incorrectly.
