They have no need for speed. However, performance monitoring is considerably
more important than simply having bragging rights about your system speed. You don??™t need to be
a race fan to gain something important from performance monitoring.
One of the tasks I perform after I set up a new system is to obtain and store a baseline performance evaluation.
The purpose of this stored data is to provide a baseline for comparison later??”after the system
has operated for a while. When someone complains that their system no longer works as it did when it
was new, I use the performance baseline I created to find out where the problem lies. For example, an
inordinate level of network traffic might clue me into the activities of a cracker or a load of adware on the
system. High error levels might tell me that a piece of hardware is beginning to fail. Both hard drives and
network adapters are famous for providing this heads-up information before they become unusable. In
short, performance isn??™t necessarily about speed; you can use performance statistics to learn more
about your system and to fix it faster.
