You can perform
Active Directory automation equally well using batch files, scripts, or even full-fledged applications.
Working with Active Directory in newer versions of Windows carries some extra baggage. Vista
and Windows Server 2008 users will have to observe a few additional precautions when working
with these utilities.
?
You must open an administrator command prompt to use these utilities. (Server Core users
automatically get an administrator command prompt.) To open an administrator command
line, right-click the Start
Programs
Accessories
Command Prompt entry and choose
Run as Administrator from the context menu.
466 CHAPTER 19
CONFIGURING DIRECTORY SERVICES
?
You must ensure you have full access to the server. Remember that Vista and Windows
Server 2008 (either version) treat any network drive as the Internet zone until such time as
you change the zone to the Trusted zone. You typically need to have Trusted zone access to
the network drive to work with Active Directory.
?
As with any other version of Windows, you must have administrative privileges to work
with Active Directory in Vista or Windows Server 2008. In some cases, you might have to
provide access to a resource specifically in your name to manipulate it.
