Working with Users, Groups, and Computers
It??™s time to start working with all of the utilities you??™ve seen so far in the chapter to create short
scripts that help you get things done quickly at the command line. In many cases, you could type
these scripts at the command prompt, but trying to remember the precise syntax could prove difficult.
It??™s better to place the commands in a batch file or create an interactive script to use them. The
following sections describe specific topics, but you can use these examples to create a wealth of
other scripts.
Obtaining a User??™s Logon Name
Sometimes you??™ll receive a help desk ticket where the user expects that you??™ll know their logon
name, despite the fact that you have several thousand users to track. In many cases, without the
logon name, you can??™t do much for the user.
