Even though the Microsoft tools are a bit inconvenient
and a tad weak, they do work. This chapter helps you build these skills:
? Protect your system from viruses, adware, and other sources of contamination
? Manage and terminate applications as necessary
? Convert event logs into a usable format
MANAGING WINDOWS IN A NEW WAY 517
Now that you know about the tools that Microsoft provides for monitoring your system, you
need to consider how to employ them. As with the utilities described in Chapter 20, you??™ll want to
monitor your own account first. Make sure you use a test system because you definitely don??™t want
to kill tasks on a production system unless you have to. Once you feel comfortable with your skills,
test them out on a colleague. You??™ll find that figuring out what someone else is doing is harder than
monitoring yourself. Of course, the big difference between the tools in this chapter, and those you
used in Chapter 20, is that you??™ll never use these tools in a batch file or script. Always make sure
you monitor the system personally and take actions based on what you see.
Chapter 22 begins a new section on third-party utilities.
