The XVI32 utility lets you look inside files and it also provides a great deal of functionality
in a graphical package. Figure 22.1 shows a typical view of the XVI32 utility. In this case, the application
is showing the content of the
_Default.pi_
file.

Because Microsoft compressed the file shown in Figure 22.1 as a CAB file, the file begins with the
letters MSCF for Microsoft Compressed File. You can see the hexadecimal numbers in the left pane
and the associated characters in the right pane. Look at the third row down and you??™ll see the preserved
name
(_default.pif
) of this file in the right pane near the left side and continuing down
Working with File Extensions
Windows attempts to hide file extensions and simply show you an icon to identify files. In fact, the lack
of file extensions has prompted some industry leaders to warn of viruses and other problems that users
encounter when they maintain the Microsoft default of hiding file extensions. Some people use this feature
to make one file look like another and you could end up opening an executable instead of the text
file that you thought you were opening.
