"Administering Windows Server 2008 Server Core"

-both
}
Specifies the hashing algorithm used for the file or directory. The
default setting relies on the MD5 hashing algorithm. You can learn more about the MD5 hashing
algorithm at
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1321.txt
and the SHA-1 algorithm at
http://
www.itl.nist.gov/fipspubs/fip180-1.htm
. The
-both
command line switch generates one
hash for each standard so that you end up with two hashes per file.
-xml
db
Defines the name of a file used to store the hashes for each file in XML format.
The output from this program is a table showing the hashes for each file in your specification.
For example, if you specify that you want the hash of a particular directory and that you want to
use both hashing methods, you might see output similar to that shown in Figure 22.4. The MD5
hash appears first, followed by the longer SHA-1 hash. The full path to each file appears last.
Figure 22.4
Even though it looks
like gibberish, the
hash values uniquely
identify each file.
You can send the output from the utility to an XML file. The XML format is the only option that
the utility offers for storing the hashes in an easily used form.
