Because DOS doesn??™t constantly change memory, it??™s
possible to test memory completely with a DOS utility, even though it isn??™t possible to do so from Windows.
To overcome the problems of testing memory in Windows, Microsoft recently released a Windows
Memory Diagnostic. You can download this utility from http://oca.microsoft.com/en/
windiag.asp.
The Windows Memory Diagnostic is a low-level tool. You actually place it on a 3.5-inch floppy disk or a
CD and use that media to boot your system. The reason that you have to use this approach is that you
can??™t actually test memory inside Windows??”at least not with any accuracy. People in the know have
said this for years and Microsoft has finally acknowledged the fact by releasing this utility. The reason
that this utility is so important is that many people do have memory problems on their system that
cause all kinds of hard-to-trace problems. Because memory can fail through use, it??™s important to test
systems regularly for memory problems. Even though this utility doesn??™t run at the command line, as
an administrator you should have this utility (or one like it) because you never know when a memory
problem will ruin your day.
