"Administering Windows Server 2008 Server Core"

Microsoft does provide some special features on Server Core that make your work considerably
easier. You met one of the utilities in Chapter 24, AppCmd. This particular utility makes working
at the command line considerably easier. Interestingly enough, AppCmd isn??™t a default part of the
Windows Server 2008 graphical version. You can, however, use AppCmd just as easily with the
graphical version of the product as you can with Server Core. The second utility, W3WP, does come
with all versions of Windows that support IIS 7, but you??™ll probably use it more when working with
Server Core than you will with other versions of Windows.
This chapter also discusses a number of configuration files that you can use to change how IIS 7
works. These configuration files are precisely the same no matter which version of Windows you
use to host IIS 7. Consequently, it??™s possible to configure an IIS 7 setup using the GUI, and then
move it over to Server Core. You??™ll still need to make some changes in most cases, but the number
of changes should be small.
In this chapter, you??™ll learn how to do the following:
?
Use a client system to manage the server
?
Work with the AppCmd utility
?
Work with the W3WP utility
?
Modify the CONFIG files directly
Working from the Client
Working with IIS 7 from the client presents some special challenges.
