Active Directory supports full data
replication so that every domain controller has a
copy of the data. This is essentially a special purpose
database that contains information formatted
according to a specific schema. Active Directory is
designed to make Windows more reliable and
secure, while reducing the work required by both
the developer and administrator for application
support and distribution. The user benefits as well
since Active Directory fully supports roving users
and maintains a full record of user information,
which reduces the effects of local workstation
downtime.

Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
A method of computing the specific address of
any entity on any Transmission Control Protocol/
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) network. The network
driver sends out a broadcast message asking which
piece of hardware is associated with a particular IP
address. If a piece of hardware responds with a combination
of its IP address and hardware identification
number, then the network driver makes the
association. This technique is normally used with
devices such as Small Computer System Interface
(SCSI) host adapters, where using the SCSI ID is
much easier than using the 48-bit Ethernet hardware
address.
