Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)
A data transfer method that relies on packets (cells)
of a fixed size. The cell size used with ATM is smaller
than used with older technologies, which enhances
network efficiency by reducing the number of padding
characters required to create complete cells.
An ATM network typically transfers data at 25 to
622 Mbps. Most ATM services use one of four types
of transmission. The Constant Bit Rate (CBR) service
uses a constant stream that??™s equivalent to working
with a leased line. The Variable Bit Rate (VBR) service
varies the stream as needed to accommodate bursts
in activity. This is a good option for voice and videoconferencing.
The Available Bit Rate (ABR) service
guarantees a minimum constant bandwidth, but
allows bursts when the network is otherwise
unused. The Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) service is a
low cost alternative that doesn??™t guarantee a specific
bandwidth. This is a good option for file transfers
and other tasks that can tolerate delays.
