Cyclic Redundancy Code (CRC)
A technique used to ensure the reliability of information
stored on any media, transported across network
cabling, or sent from one place to another using
other techniques. It uses a cyclic calculation to create
a numeric check number. The computer performs
the same calculation when it retrieves the data and
compares it to the CRC. If the two match, there??™s no
data error. Otherwise, the sender must transmit the
data again or the recipient must reconstruct it. If
neither the sender nor the recipient can reconstruct
the data, the system registers an error and informs
the user of the data loss.

Data Set Ready (DSR)
A serial port signaling line that indicates that the
Data Communications Equipment (DCE), such as a
modem, is turned on.
Data Stream
One of several methods to send or access information
that resides either in local or remote storage. A
data stream consists of a series of bits taken from any
location within a data storage unit (such as a file).
The information can flow continuously (as in an
Internet transfer for music) or in blocks (as occurs
when reading data from a file on the local hard
drive).
