Defragmenting
1. The process of organizing files on a storage media
so that the file system can access each sector of the
file sequentially. Defragmenting the file improves
overall system performance by reducing the head
movement of the hard drive. 2. The process of organizing
and cleaning the Windows registry. The
defragmentation application reorders the entries for
faster access and locates entries that the system no
longer requires. In most cases, the application
removes the extraneous entries with user permission
to enhance registry performance. In addition, the
registry exists in multiple physical locations on
the hard drive, which become physically fragmented.
However, since Windows locks the registry files,
standard defragmentation doesn??™t reorganize these
files, so this process normally includes physical disk
file organization as well.
