Microsoft Database Engine (MSDE)
A miniature form of SQL Server that enables developers
to create test database applications. This term
also appears as Microsoft Desktop Engine and
Microsoft Data Engine in various references. Microsoft
designed this engine for use by one person, usually
the developer, although you can potentially use it
for up to five people. The developer accesses MSDE
through a programming language Integrated Development
Environment (IDE) or using command line

utilities. In some cases, MSDE also provides access
to a remote copy of SQL Server. Some third-party
products, such as MSDE Query, provide a Graphical
User Interface (GUI) for MSDE.
Microsoft Installer (MSI)
1. A technique for installing applications within
Windows that allows later removal even if the system
configuration has changed. This technique also provides
support for additional vendor information,
partial installations, multiple configurations, and
installation recovery. 2. A file format containing
instructions for installing Windows applications. The
file is actually a database that contains specialized
instructions and data in a specific format that??™s read
by the Microsoft installer application.
