In most cases, this involves three steps: installing an
appropriate driver, adding a source to the Data
Sources (ODBC) applet in the Control Panel, and
using specialized statements, such as Structured
Query Language (SQL), to access the database. The
precise functionality and configuration requirements
of ODBC depend on the ODBC driver used to
create the connection.
Open System Interconnection Reference Model (OSI)
A theoretical seven layer protocol model of network
connectivity commonly used to teach how network
protocols interact. Data is passed from one layer to
the next until the sender physically transmits it to
another machine. The reverse process takes place
when the data arrives at the receiving machine,
unwrapping layer after layer of protocol information,
until the data appears in its original form. The
OSI reference model was originally supposed to
unite all network models, but proprietary formats
prevented full acceptance by vendors and the OSI
reference model became a teaching tool instead.
(The X.400 and X.500 standards are directly based on
the OSI reference model.) The seven OSI reference
model layers include application, presentation, session,
transport, network, data link, and physical.
