When used with a command line utility, the
user types the pipe symbol (|) to represent the connection
between two commands or utilities. Pipes
usually provide a streamed data transfer, but can
also perform block transfers depending on the capabilities
of the processes.

634 GLOSSARY
Primary Domain Controller (PDC)
The Windows server responsible for tracking
changes made to the domain accounts and storing
them in the directory database (usually Active
Directory with newer versions of Windows). In
addition, the PDC provides user authentication and
other services. A domain has one PDC. Windows
2000 and above doesn??™t have an actual PDC. Instead,
newer Windows servers use Active Directory as the
authentication database. All Domain Controllers
(DCs) are equal with regard to functionality. However,
many utilities and applications that work with
a PDC also work with the Windows 2000 setup.
Process Identifier (PID)
A numeric value associated with a process running
on a specific machine. Every process has a unique
PID, making it possible to locate a specific process,
even if multiple copies of a single application are
running on the machine.
